3-Hour CE Seminar: Ethical Metamorphoses

"Of three metamorphoses of the spirit do I tell you: how the spirit becomes a camel, the camel a lion, and the lion at last a child… The child is innocence and forgetting, a new beginning, a game, a self-rolling wheel.”

– Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spake Zarathustra

As mental health practitioners, we want to be more Self-led, and to help those we care for to claim their own moral authority. While striving to guide our clients beyond black-and-white thinking, we may notice parts of ourselves that are heavily rule-based in making moral decisions. Our rigid beliefs may also clash with those of our clients or colleagues, leading to painful tensions. We may have other parts that – with Nietzsche – rise up in rage against beliefs and traditions seen as harmful, with the intention of leading others to childlike freedom. We may have been taught to suppress those rageful parts of ourselves, as well as those that may have incurred others’ rage; and to limit our moral searching only to “what works” for each individual seeker. But what if community and tradition – rightly understood and unburdened – can offer vital support to Self-led ethical decision-making?

Participants in this seminar will, collaboratively and in a supportive group setting:
  • Cultivate curiosity about parts of ourselves and of others that hold conflicting, “absolute” values
  • Gain compassionate understanding of the positive intent behind even extreme psychological and cultural oppositions
  • Experience how a systems approach can introduce more flexibility and choice in ethical decision-making
  • Learn how choosing “what works” can be done in community, rather than alone
  • Be introduced to MacIntyre’s view of moral tradition as apprenticeship in a craft
  • Appreciate healing without pathologizing in traditions that honor multiplicity
